As of today, March 20, winter has officially ended, though in southeastern Michigan at least the season has been reasonably mild, a very welcome situation! White-winged Crossbills seem to have dispersed or moved on, and are apparently less numerous than they were at their peak in late January and early February. I'll still be posting updates to a newly created map for crossbills observed this spring. Observers should also be on the lookout for nesting crossbills, which happens sometimes well south of normal after irruptions as large as this one was. A Pine Siskin nest in Wayne County is evidence that this is certainly possible with crossbills as well. The web page can be accessed by following the following link:
Spring Crossbills in Michigan
And here are three newer photos I obtained back in February.
